Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS) is an intensive academic program which runs for 3 to 6 weeks and takes place both in summer and winter. The program includes German language courses as well as subject classes on various topics (in English).

Since the international summer university was founded in 1998, the number of participants has continuously increased. After the addition of a second summer term  in2004, a winter term was also added in 2007. Now, about 650 students participate each year. The program dates are scheduled in accordance with international semester breaks.

Summer term students predominantly come from the northern hemisphere, whereas winter term participants predominantly come from the southern hemisphere.

FUBiS classes make use of the diverse resources offered by Freie Unviersität as well as the city of Berlin in order to provide participants with a multifaceted study experience. Excursions, field trips and cultural events complement the academic program. Upon request FUBiS also arranges housing for the duration of the program.

FUBiS participants become part of an international community of young people from over 60 countries. This multinational environment furthers their intercultural competence.

FUBiS’ goal is to provide students with a stimulating and rewarding experience – academically, culturally, and personally. Upon successful completion of the program, they are awarded ECTS credits which may be counted toward their degree at their home institutions.
